| Beasts of Burden: Stray - Read The First Short Story For Free Online |
[Jul. 10th, 2009|04:40 pm] |
Hey, folks, still in Beasts of Burden promo mode. This time around we have an online preview of the series.
Dark Horse has posted the first Beasts of Burden short story on their site for anyone and everyone to read (and hopefully enjoy). The 8-pg story, Stray, was done in 2003, art by Jill Thompson, story by me. It originally appeared in The Dark Horse Book of Hauntings, but some folks may have seen it when DHC printed it up as a mini Halloween giveaway comic.
This story was done as a one-shot, when we had no idea we'd continue it, forget one day having a dedicated series. It introduces most of the main characters, and pretty much introduces the concept: animals dealing with the supernatural in a small town. Jill won an Eisner for her painted work on Stray, which has only gotten better and better with each installment (imho). If all goes well, Dark Horse will be putting more of the short stories from the DHC anthologies up on their site in the coming weeks. It's a great way to get to know what the series is like, without spending a dime or searching the bookstore or comic shop. We're doing what we can to get the word out while retailers are considering their orders, so, thanks for bearing with me while I shill for the series.
It was either this or the story of how my car broke down today while I was on the way to my MRI appointment. Yeah, maybe that was funny, but I gotta go with the comics, sorry (my phone was dead and I was stuck in the middle of the street when my car's shut off triggered after I drove over a vicious pothole. Oh, the hilarity! MRI re-scheduled, day partly shot.).
Anyway, I hope you enjoy the first Beasts story. If you do, please tell a friend or two to give it the once over. It's free. And please consider pre-ordering the first issue of the series, coming out September 16th.
Appreciate it.

| Zubby Darkstalkers Tribute |
[Jul. 10th, 2009|02:24 pm] |
I finally got around to posting up my Darkstalkers Tribute art piece of Hsien-Ko, the Chinese ghost. For those of you who don't know the character, she has all kinds of weapons and silly items up her sleeves that she attacks enemies with.
Like with my Street Fighter Tribute pic from last year we were free to interpret the character our own way, which was a blast.

We're still taking online orders for the limited edition hardcover edition of the book for another 3 days, so if you want a copy and aren't attending Otakon, San Diego Comicon, Toronto Fan Expo or PAX, this is your last chance. |

| Life drawings |
[Jul. 10th, 2009|01:38 pm] |
I posted some drawings from Asifa over here. Sorry for the link, it's too much work to upload them to flickr and then blog them. ;)
I picked up about 4 new tubes of watercolor paint Wednesday and did some studies with them last night. It's been a while since I've had time to paint, so it was nice. I just ordered a copy of Bill Cone's pastel book from a show he had in Northern California. I'm so excited, his work just blows my mind.
I'm thinking about baking some bread today, even though we have so many leftovers from eating with Allan's family while they were visiting. I've also been drooling over some of the dishes on this website. I got some zucchini, carrots, peaches and cherries at the green market Wednesday, so we'll see what I make in the next day or so.
I'm looking forward to Sketchcrawl tomorrow! I haven't been to Central Park since early spring! Also Allan has a table at the first Asian American Comic Con tomorrow where I'll be stopping to visit later in the day. |

| San Diego or Bust! |
[Jul. 10th, 2009|10:48 am] |

Long time, no post here at the LJ! I aim to try to make this a more active journal (so long as people are still USING livejournal, that is), and in the meantime, I thought I'd crosspost/update you all on my upcoming trip down South. That's right, I'm going to Comic-Con!
The machinery of fate has aligned in just the right way to allow me to not only attend this year's San Diego Comicon, but to actually exhibit there as well! From the looks of it, I'll be sharing boothspace with Maddox at booth #2646, and I'm sure he's a perfectly charming fellow.
So, what am I planning on doing at Comicon? I'm bringing pretty much my entire catalog of merchandise, from Tarot decks to t-shirts, buttons and my older comics, and will also be doing a lot of promotion for Ellie Connelly, with free buttons for the asking. The Palms Read Here! t-shirts have been ordered, and hopefully will arrive in time to make it to Comic-con, and I'll also be bringing some new button designs.
I'm also going to be taking commissions for sketches on-the-spot, and doing free artist trading cards as well. I'm a bit nervous about that, as it's been a while since I've done commissions at a show, but I'd like to get over that stage-fright. So, think about what you might want me to draw, and if you've got a specific character in mind, please bring visual reference.
Ellie Connelly should be situated in Booth #2646, nestled happily between Komikwerks and Boom! Studios (makers of excellent Muppet comics). When you enter the hall, head to aisle 2600 and head to the back of the hall, that's where you'll find me.
So please, if you're a fan of Ellie Connelly and you're planning to be at San Diego Comic-Con, come and say 'howdy' and collect a free sketch! And if you're lucky and I've got the space, you might even get to enjoy one of the clumsiest, least-credible Tarot readings ever experienced by mankind! |

| Big Deal Comics |
[Jul. 10th, 2009|09:59 am] |
I just received a stack of comics from the inimitable Patrick Dean. How big a stack?

If I'm reading that correctly, about 23 inches of comics! Here are the books all spread out-like:

Anyone else 'torture' their kitties when they're taking a shower? Polly likes to sit in there with me and I periodically stick my head out at her and say, "Help me Polly! I'm all wet! Water! Help! Help me Pooooos!" and she rushes to me, paws up on the side of the tub, and yells at me. Then I duck back in. Lather, rinse, repeat.
I'm so mean.
Quint agrees, looking at me disapprovingly:

| Stan Lee's Usagi |
[Jul. 10th, 2009|05:51 am] |

Usagi is one of the themes for the San Diego Con's souvenir book, and my pals from CAPS (Comic Arts Professional Society) did a jam drawing. Here's Stan Lee's version of Usagi. Stan once gave me a Spider-man sketch, but this Usagi is just too cool.
Other contributors include Sergio Aragones, Dan Spiegle, Dean Yeagle, Kazu Kibiushi, Bill Morrison, Mell Lazarus (Mama as Usagi), and Scott Shaw! Needless to say, I am very flattered and very touched by this. |
